My Education

My education started in parochial schools in San Francisco's Sunset District. I got my share of my knuckles getting rapped with rulers and occasionally, but rarely, had to sit in the front of the room, in a corner, wearing a dunce cap. Some of the elderly nuns had been born during the Indian Wars of the 1870's.

In the 1950's cutting up a discarded geography book and jigsaw-puzzling South America and Africa together to show that they had once been a single continent was serious heresy and dealt with severely. A decade or two later schools were teaching about plate tectonics, a vindication, but my knuckles still hurt to this very day.

In the turbulent 1960's I attended Herbert Hoover Junior High and Lincoln High School (the school that Johnny Mathis graduated from) where I saw busing, race riots, the drug culture, the Haight-Ashbury and the advent of the Hippie. I saw many a promising student and even a few enviable class presidents die from vices of their own choosing. A Block Letter Award and a gold medal from the US Army was awarded to me for Rifle Marksmanship. Most high schools across the USA had indoor rifle ranges in the basement from their building till the late 80's or so.. I am told that Boise High did also. Guns in school? I brought a target rifle on the bus 3 times a week.

I attended City College of San Francisco with the intent to go on for a degree in Anthropology, but settled for an AA degree, as the war in Vietnam was still on and I had the fortune of having my draft number fall thru the cracks in a broken system. They never called me, thinking I was going to join and the bidding services probably had pull over the army's claim.

Over the next 25 years I attended a variety of colleges and took dozens of classes in a host of subjects. I took a number of Administration of Criminal Justice classes, later I attended a Police Academy while working as a deputy sheriff in one of the poorest counties in the State of California. I took a number of classes in Search and Rescue and was a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1A-W) the W being a wilderness classification, where the EMT had special training to save lives under conditions where medical services were too distant.

Graduate of Boise State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science, Public Law and Political Philosophy (May 2003). While I believe that BSU has an excellent Political Science Department, I must note that it seems just a bit odd that the department waxes rather liberal in state that is staunchly conservative.

My current career is as a Financial Planner and Independant Insurance Agent, assisting people with issues regarding retirement planning, Medicare Supplement and Advantage plans, Health & Disability plans etc. Before that I had been a Security Consultant, I have had specialized training in areas of security not commonly known to the layman, these involving CCTV (closed circuit television) and access-control systems. At one time in the past my customers included ALL the Ross stores, ALL the Mervyns stores, ALL the Payless, Thrifty...etc. I designed security systems for San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Medical Center, Pacific Presbyterian, Stanford University Library, the San Francisco Unified School District and about half the high-tech companies in Silicon Valley. My specialized security education allowed me to be a consultant to the INEL lab in eastern Idaho, designing camera systems to monitor the handling of nuclear wastes being processed for final disposal.
