Tax PoliciesLet it suffice for me to say that while I concede that some taxes are necessary for the operation of a limited government, I am a stringent opponent of raising taxes and it would take a very compelling situation for me to agree to any tax increase, and would in fact, argue against many taxes we now have, demanding justification for them and an accounting of thier proper spending. I intend to be a pain in the butt of the tax and spend lobby. Here are a few quotes on taxes from the IRS website: "Taxes are what we pay for civilized society." Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., U.S. Supreme Court Justice "The power of taxing people and their property is essential to the very existence of government." James Madison, U.S. President "To tax and to please, no more than to love and to be wise, is not given to men." Edmund Burke, 18th Century Irish political philosopher and British statesman “I am proud to be paying taxes in the United States. The only thing is – I could be just as proud for half the money.” Arthur Godfrey, entertainer “People who complain about taxes can be divided into two classes: men and women.” Unknown "No government can exist without taxation. This money must necessarily be levied on the people; and the grand art consists of levying so as not to oppress." Frederick the Great, 18th Century Prussian king "Like mothers, taxes are often misunderstood, but seldom forgotten." Lord Bramwell, 19th Century English jurist "The best measure of a man's honesty isn't his income tax return. It's the zero adjust on his bathroom scale." Arthur C. Clarke, author "Next to being shot at and missed, nothing is really quite as satisfying as an income tax refund." F. J. Raymond, humorist "A tax loophole is "something that benefits the other guy. If it benefits you, it is tax reform." Russell B. Long, U.S. Senator "Few of us ever test our powers of deduction, except when filling out an income tax form." Laurence J. Peter, author “The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax.” Albert Einstein, physicist “Taxation with representation ain’t so hot either.” Gerald Barzan, humorist “Where there is an income tax, the just man will pay more and the unjust less on the same amount of income.” Plato “Income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf.” Will Rogers, humorist And a few from another view: "To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical." Thomas Jefferson "The income tax is a twentieth-century socialist experiment that has failed. Before the income tax was imposed on us just 80 years ago, government had no claim to our income. Only sales, excise, and tariff taxes were allowed." Alan Keyes "When the federal government spends more each year than it collects in tax revenues, it has three choices: It can raise taxes, print money, or borrow money. While these actions may benefit politicians, all three options are bad for average Americans." Ron Paul The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn't get worse every time Congress meets. Will Rogers "The only difference between a tax man and a taxidermist is that the taxidermist leaves the skin." Mark Twain "It is a good thing that we do not get as much government as we pay for." Will Rogers "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents..." James Madison "Alexander Hamilton started the U.S. Treasury with nothing and that was the closest our country has ever been to being even." Will Rogers "There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him." Robert A. Heinlein "I am proud to be paying taxes in the United States. The only thing is I could be just as proud for half of the money." Arthur Godfrey "Unquestionably, there is progress. The average American now pays out twice as much in taxes as he formerly got in wages." H. L. Mencken "The point to remember is that what the government gives it must first take away." John S. Coleman "America is a land of taxation that was founded to avoid taxation." Dr. Laurence J. Peter "Congress can raise taxes because it can persuade a sizable fraction of the populace that somebody else will pay." Milton Friedman "There is no such thing as a good tax." Winston Churchill "When there is an income tax, the just man will pay more and the unjust less on the same amount of income." Plato "To force a man to pay for the violation of his own liberty is indeed an addition of insult to injury." Benjamin Tucker "The taxpayer: that's someone who works for the federal government, but doesn't have to take a civil service examination." Ronald Reagan "Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors... and miss." Robert A. Heinlein "We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle." Winston Churchill "A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, which debt he proposes to pay off with your money." G. Gordon Liddy "The income tax created more criminals than any other single act of government." Barry Goldwater "Collecting more taxes than is absolutely necessary is legalized robbery."
